NEOM: World Cup 2034 Host City Guide

NEOM was the bid's showstopper: a stadium inside The Line, the mirrored, car-free linear city planned for Saudi Arabia's north-west coast, with the pitch roughly 350 metres above the ground. No World Cup venue had ever been imagined like it.
Then reality arrived. In October 2026, Reuters reported the NEOM Stadium had been shelved indefinitely as the Public Investment Fund tightened spending, and Semafor reported it among five stadiums to be cut from the plan. Saudi authorities did not comment. As things stand, NEOM is not expected to host matches in 2034.
We keep this page because the story matters: NEOM shows both the ambition of the original bid and the direction the real tournament is taking. If the plan changes again, this page will say so at the top.
What the bid promised
The bid book placed the NEOM Stadium inside The Line, the 170 km-long linear city that is NEOM's centrepiece, with a marina at its base and capacity of 46,010. The group-stage draw was also planned for The Line Convention Center — a sign of how central NEOM was to the bid's story about the future.
NEOM's other projects frame the picture: Sindalah, the luxury island resort in the Red Sea, opened in October 2024, and Trojena, the mountain project due to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games. The region is real and under construction — but the stadium was always one of its least certain pieces.
What changed in 2026
The October 2026 reports linked the cuts to budget discipline at the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign fund behind NEOM and much of the stadium programme. Five new stadiums were reported for the axe: NEOM, New Murabba and ROSHN in Riyadh, plus Qiddiya Coast and King Abdullah Economic City near Jeddah.
Dropping NEOM leaves four host cities and ten stadiums. A revised venue plan needs FIFA's approval, and neither FIFA nor Saudi organisers had published one when these reports appeared. Until they do, the honest status is: proposed in 2024, reported dropped in 2026, officially unconfirmed either way since.
Can fans still visit NEOM in 2034?
Possibly — as tourists rather than match-goers. Neom Bay Airport (NUM) already operates, and Sindalah welcomes guests. The Line itself is being built in phases, and how much of it a visitor can see by 2034 depends on construction progress through the decade.
Treat NEOM as a side trip from the football, not a base for it. The nearest confirmed host city is Jeddah, a flight of about an hour and a half away. If a revised plan restores the stadium, we will rebuild this page around match travel instead.
Weather in the NEOM region
The north-west coast is milder than the Gulf side: winter highs in the low-to-mid 20s, cooler nights, and the mountains behind the coast — where Trojena sits above 2,000 metres — can see snow in a hard winter. Summer is hot but sea breezes take the edge off the worst of it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will NEOM host World Cup 2034 matches?
It looks unlikely. The stadium was in the original bid book, but in October 2026 Reuters reported it shelved indefinitely and Semafor listed it among five stadiums to be cut. No official revised plan has been published, so the bid version is not formally cancelled — but fans should not plan around NEOM matches.
What was the NEOM Stadium supposed to be?
A 46,010-seat stadium built into The Line, NEOM's planned linear city, around 350 metres above ground with a marina below — the most futuristic venue ever proposed for a World Cup.
Where is NEOM?
In Tabuk Province on Saudi Arabia's north-west Red Sea coast, near the borders with Jordan and Egypt. Neom Bay Airport (NUM) serves the area, and Sindalah island resort opened there in 2024.
Will the 2034 draw still happen at NEOM?
The bid book planned the draw for The Line Convention Center. With the stadium reported dropped, the draw venue is an open question. FIFA has announced neither a draw date nor a venue.
